ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES ~ APRIL 11th

Dear JES family and friends,

On April 11th, we will be going shoeless at Johnson to bring attention to the needs of children around the world who miss opportunities in life because they do not have shoes. Did you know that one pair of shoes for a child can gain them entry to school, keep them healthy, protect them from injury and most of all give them the hope that someone cares about them?  We will also be collecting pairs of new shoes to donate to Shoes for Orphan Souls. For more information visit the Shoes for Orphan Souls website at:

Fourth Grade Orientation for Intermediate School

Orientation for our fourth graders going to Durham Intermediate next fall is the morning of May 7th. All fourth graders will travel to DIS by bus for an informational talk by the DIS administrators and a tour of the campus. We will leave JES at 8:30 and return around 10AM. A Parent Orientation is being offered at 6PM in the Durham Intermediate Cafeteria. There is an informal coffee for parents at 9AM on May 8th at DIS.  Transition to fifth grade can be a challenge. Attending the orientation meetings can ease some of the anxiety by answering many of your questions about procedures, the schedules and the “always challenging” lockers!

Our character trait for April is FRIENDSHIP – spending time with someone you trust and enjoy!

Rachel’s Rally and Relay for Life are coming up on May 3rd and 4th at Carroll High School. This is a community wide celebration of kindness and compassion followed by a service opportunity to walk to raise awareness for the ongoing battle against cancer. To get more information or sign up for a relay team go to: http://www.relayforlife.org/southlaketx .

STARR testing takes place this month. Fourth grade will be taking the Writing assessment this week on April 2nd and 3rd. Third and fourth grades will be testing on April 23rd and 24th.  Our students are well prepared. The most important thing that parents can do to help is make sure your child is rested, well fed, and in attendance on time for testing days. Thank you for your help.

As always, if I can assist you in any way, please contact me.

Kindest regards,

March's Character Value - HONESTY

Dear JES family and friends,

Many thanks to our PTO for “cooking up” a special week of recognition for us last week! We truly feel appreciated! The sweet notes, tasty treats, cookbooks with delicious family recipes, the Friday luncheon and the apron…WOW you out did yourselves! Thank you to all of our parents for your continued support throughout the year.

The “Drive for a SMILE” toothbrush drive was a success! We exceeded our goal of collecting 600 toothbrushes! Thank you to everyone who contributed whether it was by donating a toothbrush or counting them at the end – together we make a difference especially for those children who will receive a toothbrush to promote dental health through Cook Childrens’ Hospital. A special thanks to our nurse Susan Bonczyk for arranging to get the toothbrushes delivered to the hospital. For meeting our goal, the students and staff were rewarded with sugarless bubblegum (or an alternative) and permission to chew it during school!

HONESTY is the character value for the month of March. The definition is choosing to be truthful in whatever you say or do. Watch out George Washington and Abe Lincoln! After this month, our school will be filled with children who will go down in history for their inability to tell a lie, because we are dedicating the whole month of March to the value of HONESTY.

Kindergarten Preview at JES - April the 18th from 5-6:15. This is an opportunity for prospective kindergartners to visit the Johnson campus. If you have a child who will be five years old by September 1st, 2013, plan on visiting this fun event. Be sure and tell your neighbors and friends about our Preview, too!

As always, if I can assist you in any way, please contact me.
